— Chapter 01

Panglao Island, Bohol — The Main Hub

The Philippines is one of the top three freediving destinations in the world — alongside Dahab and the Canary Islands. Warm water, high visibility, dense marine life, and a large concentration of certified centers make it a practical choice for a certification course, an advanced training block, or simply great open water diving.

Panglao is the Philippines' most established freediving destination. Located in Bohol province in the Visayas, Panglao Island has developed into a dedicated freediving hub with multiple certified centers operating year-round.

Water conditions

Temperature
26–30°C — no wetsuit needed for most divers
Visibility
15–30m on good days
Depth
several sites reach 20–40m accessible by a 5–10 minute banca ride

Main dive sites near Panglao

Balicasag Island
wall dives, high marine diversity, some current (check the tide)
Arbol de Piedra
distinctive rock formations at 20–25m
Pamilacan Island
spinner dolphins, occasional whale sharks

Multiple AIDA and SSI certified centers operate on Panglao. Most offer AIDA 1 through AIDA 3, with some running Molchanovs Wave courses. Ask about current instructor availability when you book — smaller centers sometimes require a minimum number of students to run a course.

Getting there
fly to Tagbilaran Airport (TAG) in Bohol, then 45 minutes by taxi to Panglao — direct flights from Manila (1.5 hours) and Cebu (20 minutes)

Dauin and Dumaguete, Negros Oriental

Dauin is a short drive south of Dumaguete City, accessible by fast ferry from Cebu (3 hours) or by direct flight to Sibulan Airport.

Why Dauin
some of the Philippines' best muck diving and marine macro life, a growing freediving scene with certified instructors, and a more relaxed atmosphere than Panglao — fewer tourists, longer average stays
Water conditions
similar to Panglao — 26–29°C, 15–25m visibility — less swell protection than Panglao
Apo Island
accessible by 30-minute banca ride from Dauin — one of the Philippines' best dive sites and worth building a visit around

Batangas (Anilao and Verde Island)

For divers based in Manila or traveling through the capital, Batangas is the practical option — 2.5 hours south by road, no flight required.

Verde Island Passage sits between Batangas and Mindoro. The marine biodiversity density here is exceptional even by Philippine standards — current research puts it among the highest concentration of marine life per square meter on the planet.

Freediving specifics
multiple sites at 15–30m accessible from Anilao, significant current on some Verde Island sites — check conditions before committing to depth
Best for
Manila-based divers, divers combining a city stay with a short dive trip, or those who want exceptional marine life density over deep training depth

Courses and Certification

Certification in the Philippines costs $180–300 USD for AIDA 2 or SSI Level 1 — typically 30–50% below equivalent courses in the US or Europe.

Common courses available at major centers

AIDA 1 (pool only)
1 day
AIDA 2 / SSI Level 1
2–3 days, pool + open water to 20m
AIDA 3 / SSI Level 2
3–4 days, open water to 30m
Molchanovs Wave 1/2
available at some Panglao centers

When to Go

Season
Conditions
Notes
November – May
Calm seas, 25–30m visibility
Peak season, best conditions
June – October
Typhoon season, variable
Panglao still operates — Batangas more sheltered
December – January
Peak crowding, peak prices
Book 4–6 weeks ahead
March – May
Excellent conditions, pre-peak pricing
Best value window

Best months overall: March–May — conditions equal to December–January, without the holiday crowd pricing.

Practical Logistics

Gear
most divers freedive in a swimsuit or thin 1–2mm suit year-round — if training depth consistently over multiple days, a 3mm suit is comfortable for long sessions
Currency
Philippine Peso (PHP) — course fees quoted in USD — ATMs widely available in Panglao, Dumaguete, and Anilao
Connectivity
strong 4G coverage in main tourist areas — most centers and guesthouses have wifi
Accommodation
wide range in Panglao from $15–20/night guesthouses to $80–120/night beach resorts — staying near your center simplifies early-morning session logistics

Philippines vs. Dahab: Which Should You Choose?

Factor
Philippines (Panglao)
Dahab, Egypt
Water temp
26–30°C (warm)
22–27°C (mild)
Course cost
$180–300 USD
$150–280 USD
Depth access
20–40m by boat
40m+ directly from shore
Marine life
Exceptional
Good
Travel (from US East Coast)
22+ hours
16–18 hours via Europe
Best for
Training + marine life
Serious depth progression

Choose the Philippines if you want excellent marine life, warm water, and a strong certification course at good value. Choose Dahab if deep depth training is the primary goal — the Blue Hole provides immediate access to serious depth without a boat ride, which matters when you're doing multiple dives a day.
