When Freedivers Use Nose Clips

Most freedivers don't think about the nose clip until they need one. Then they realize a swim nose clip falls off at 8m and a freediving nose clip stays on at 25m — and that difference matters.

Static apnea in the pool

The most common use. During a long static breath-hold, wearing a nose clip instead of a full mask reduces the volume of air you have to manage — there's no mask airspace to equalize. Combined with swim goggles, this is a streamlined setup used by many competition freedivers for pool training.

Dynamic apnea (pool)

Same logic as static — nose clip plus swim goggles is lower drag than a full mask and eliminates the mask airspace equalization step on every duck dive. Competition divers in AIDA pool events typically use this setup.

Frenzel equalization training

Frenzel technique requires blocking the nose consistently. A nose clip frees both hands for technique drills, especially relevant when using mouthfill training exercises or practicing dry on land.

Best Freediving Nose Clips

Cressi Calibro — Best Overall

The most widely used freediving nose clip. Wide silicone pads, strong spring tension, slim profile. Holds reliably on most nose shapes to 20–30m. The most common recommendation for pool training at ~$12.

Salvimar Apnea — Premium Pick

Contoured bridge design that fits a wider range of nose shapes than the Cressi Calibro. Slightly lighter, similar grip strength. At ~$18–22, worth considering if the Calibro doesn't fit your nose bridge well.

Speedo Biofuse — Budget Pool Option

Technically a swim nose clip, but has better grip than most budget options. Fine for pure pool static training at 1.5–2m depth. Not appropriate for any depth training.

How to Find the Right Fit

The pool test

  1. 01 —Put the clip on dry — it should feel firm but not painful
  2. 02 —Submerge your face in a pool or basin for 30 seconds
  3. 03 —Duck dive to 3–4m — does it hold without shifting?
  4. 04 —Hold face-down for 3 minutes — does it leave a mark that takes more than 90 seconds to fade?

If it shifts at 3m, the spring tension is too light or the pads don't match your nose bridge shape. If it leaves a lasting red mark, try a softer pad option.

Flatter or wider nose bridges
often fit the Salvimar's contoured design better
Higher or narrower nose bridges
typically work well with the Cressi Calibro's standard profile

Pool dynamic apnea
Nose clip + swim goggles
Equalization practice on land
Nose clip alone
Open water to 10m
Mask
Open water depth diving 10m+
Mask required — must equalize airspace
AIDA competition static/dynamic
Nose clip + goggles (standard setup)
