Mares Razor Pro HF

Thermoplastic blade · Closed heel · EU 36-46

A functional budget starter fin that gets you in the water without spending much, but the Cressi Gara's modular upgrade path makes it the better long-term choice for most divers.

Overview

The Mares Razor Pro HF suits someone who needs to get in the water this week on the smallest possible budget. The blade does its job, the price is low, and the build quality holds up for casual use.

— Section 02

Where It Works

As a starter fin for warm water casual freediving (shallow reef dives, snorkeling with long fins, and beginner course pool sessions) the Razor Pro HF is adequate. The blade stiffness is appropriate for someone developing technique, and the thermoplastic construction is durable enough for standard use.

Where It Falls Short

The foot pocket takes significant time to break in. Stiff budget pockets like this one often rub for the first few sessions before they soften, so wear neoprene socks and allow a short break-in before your first course.

The bigger limitation is the non-modular design. When you're ready to upgrade to fiberglass, which happens for most divers around 6-12 months, you'll need to buy an entirely new fin. The Cressi Gara Modular lets you swap just the blade, keeping the foot pocket you've broken in.

For the $30 price difference, the Cressi is the better long-term purchase. The Mares makes sense when budget is the only decision factor.

—— Frequently asked

Questions about
Mares Razor Pro HF.

01 How does the Mares Razor Pro compare to the Cressi Gara Modular? +
The Cressi Gara Modular is the better buy for most beginners. It costs slightly more (~$30) but offers a modular upgrade path. You can swap to fiberglass or carbon blades later without replacing the foot pocket. The Mares Razor Pro is a non-modular closed-heel design; when you outgrow the blade, you replace the entire fin. For first-time buyers, the Cressi's upgrade path is worth the small price difference.
02 Does the closed heel design affect fit? +
Closed heel means the pocket is designed to fit bare or very thin-socked feet. If you plan to dive in cold water requiring a 3-5mm wetsuit sock, you'll need a larger size, which affects heel fit. Open-heel designs (Cressi Gara, SEAC Motus) are more versatile across sock thicknesses.
