Samba and blackout both happen on or near the surface, where a trained buddy can save you and an absent one cannot. Never freedive alone. Every breath-hold dive needs a buddy watching your face from surfacing until you have given a clear OK and held a normal conversation.

What samba actually is

Samba is the freediving name for loss of motor control, almost always written LMC. It is the trembling, jerking, glassy-eyed state a diver can fall into in the first seconds after surfacing from a breath-hold. The head nods, the shoulders shudder, the hands shake, and the diver cannot speak clearly or hold a steady position in the water. The name comes from the dance-like quality of the shaking. Nobody who has seen one forgets it, and nobody who has had one should treat it lightly.

The single most important fact about samba is what it tells you: you surfaced on the edge of a blackout. Samba and blackout are not separate events. They are two points on one continuum of oxygen starvation. A samba means your brain hit an oxygen level low enough to scramble motor control. A little further down that same line is unconsciousness. Why it happens: cerebral hypoxia on surfacing

During a breath-hold dive your body steadily consumes oxygen. The brain is the most oxygen-hungry organ you have, and the motor cortex, which coordinates movement, is one of the first regions to misfire when supply runs short. Samba is what that misfiring looks like from the outside.

The cruel part is the timing. Your blood oxygen does not bottom out at depth. It keeps falling through the ascent and reaches its lowest point in the first few seconds at the surface. As you rise, the ambient pressure drops and your lungs expand, which lowers the partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs at the exact moment your brain needs it most. This is why most sambas and blackouts happen on the surface or in the last few meters of ascent, not at the bottom. Asymptomatic hypoxia
Oxygen is dropping but you feel normal. This is the dangerous stage because there is no internal alarm telling you to stop.
Symptomatic hypoxia
Something feels off, vision narrows or tingles, but you still control your technique and your airway. You should already be ending the dive.
Loss of motor control (samba)
Oxygen drops far enough to disrupt the motor cortex. Conscious but shaking, uncoordinated, and unable to reliably protect the airway.
Blackout
Oxygen drops further. Loss of consciousness, often with myoclonic jerks. The airway is fully unprotected.

Samba vs blackout: the same line, two points

The most useful mental model is a single dimmer switch for brain oxygen. As the level falls, you pass through warning signs, then samba, then blackout. Samba is not a different illness from blackout. It is the same process caught a little earlier. That is good news, because a samba gives a watching buddy a clear, visible cue to act before the diver goes fully under.

Notice that the airway risk is high in both columns. A diver in samba is awake but cannot coordinate well enough to keep water out of their airway, which is why many instructors treat an unsupported surface samba as no less urgent than a blackout. The reassuring side is that with a competent buddy already in position, a samba usually passes in seconds with no lasting harm. The danger is almost entirely about whether someone is there to support the airway, which is the whole argument for a disciplined freediving buddy system.

What samba looks like on the surface

As a buddy, your job starts before the diver surfaces and continues for a full 30 seconds after. Samba can appear the instant the face clears the water, or a few seconds later as the diver tries and fails to complete a normal recovery breath. Watch the face and the airway, not the dive computer.

  • Rhythmic shaking or trembling of the head, neck, shoulders, or arms
  • Jerky, stuttering attempts to breathe, with the mask bouncing as the diver gasps
  • Glassy, unfocused, or rolled-back eyes and a blank facial expression
  • Inability to give a clear OK signal or speak a coherent sentence
  • Slumping, loss of head position, or the airway dropping toward the water

The correct buddy response

If your buddy sambas, your only goals are to keep their airway above the water and to keep them calm and supported until oxygen recovers. Do not pull them around or shake them. Do not push them under. Stay close, stabilize them, and talk.

  1. 01 —Get into position behind or beside them and support the head so the airway stays clearly above the surface. This is the single most important action.
  2. 02 —Remove the mask or snorkel if it interferes with breathing or with your ability to see their face.
  3. 03 —Talk to them firmly and calmly. Use their name. Tell them to breathe. A diver in samba is often partly aware and responds to a calm voice.
  4. 04 —Hold them at the surface and let the shaking run its course. It usually settles within 5 to 15 seconds as blood oxygen climbs back up.
  5. 05 —If they slip into unconsciousness, switch immediately to the blackout protocol: airway up, mask off, and blow on the eyes, tap the cheek, and talk, the blow-tap-talk sequence.
  6. 06 —Once recovered, keep watching. Ask for a clear OK and a spoken sentence before you consider them safe. Have them rest and do not let them dive again that session.

These skills are not something to learn from an article. Airway support, recovery handling, and the blow-tap-talk sequence are taught and rehearsed in person on every reputable course. How to prevent samba in the first place

A samba is preventable. It means you ended the dive too close to your oxygen floor. The fix is not more breath-hold heroics, it is a wider safety margin and clean technique on the way back up. The whole point of training conservatively is so that the part of the dive where hypoxia peaks, the ascent and surface, happens with oxygen to spare. Recovery breathing

The first thing you do on surfacing is recovery breathing, often called hook breaths: a fast inhale followed by a brief hold against a slightly closed throat, repeated several times. This raises the oxygen pressure in your lungs fast, exactly when your brain is at its lowest point. Skipping recovery breaths is one of the most common reasons a controlled dive tips into a samba. Take at least three or four hook breaths before you remove gear or speak.

Stay well inside your limits

  • Never dive to your absolute maximum. Leave a clear margin on both depth and time, every dive.
  • End the dive at the first real warning sign. Throat contractions and tingling are not finish-line cues, they are exit cues.
  • Never hyperventilate. Breathe normally and calmly before the dive so your urge-to-breathe alarm still works.
  • Take long surface intervals. Full recovery between dives, often two to three times the dive duration, lets oxygen and carbon dioxide reset.
  • Do not dive tired, cold, dehydrated, or after a poor night of sleep. All of these lower your margin.
