Overview

The Salvimar N.A.T. is the strongest alternative to the Molchanovs for most recreational divers. It has a genuine anatomical shape that works, a softer rubber coating that's more comfortable for 90-minute sessions, and a price that's $25 lower.

N.A.T. Shape

N.A.T. stands for Natural Anatomic Technology, Salvimar's design approach for their anatomically shaped freediving equipment. In practice it means the weight follows the natural curve from the back of the neck to the upper trapezius, staying in position without the tendency to rock or shift that simpler flat-weight designs have.

The shape is comparable to the Molchanovs in terms of positional stability, though the Molchanovs is generally reckoned to have a slight edge for staying put on the most aggressive duck dives. For recreational freediving, both are well within the acceptable range.

The Rubber Softness

The Salvimar rubber compound is noticeably softer than Molchanovs. Over a 90-minute training session, this translates to less pressure point awareness at the neck. The downside: softer rubber marks and shows surface wear faster. Expect the Salvimar to show cosmetic wear sooner than the Molchanovs over a year of regular use, although the softer coating does not change how the weight performs.

The 1.5 kg Option

This is Salvimar's practical advantage over Molchanovs. Divers tweaking trim often find they need a middle ground between 1 and 2 kg. The 1.5 kg option exists here; it doesn't with Molchanovs.

—— Frequently asked

Questions about
Salvimar N.A.T. Neck Weight.

01 How does the Salvimar compare to the Molchanovs neck weight? +
The Salvimar N.A.T. is softer and slightly cheaper. The rubber compound is more pliable, which most divers find more comfortable for long sessions. The Molchanovs has a firmer rubber that's more durable over time. Both have good anatomical shapes and reliable quick-releases. For recreational use: Salvimar. For heavy training use: Molchanovs.
02 Is the 1.5 kg option useful? +
Yes. It fills a useful gap. Divers who find 1 kg doesn't quite fix their trim but find 2 kg too much are well served by 1.5 kg. Molchanovs only offers 1 kg and 2 kg, so if you're between those two, Salvimar is the right brand.
